Maximum Wireless Speeds
« on: August 20, 2010, 10:11:31 PM »
I have Verizon FIOS at home and it work perfectly. If I plug my Macbook into an ethernet port (switch, not even the router) my speedtest shows a 45 mbs download. My wireless connection download however is only about 15 mbs (802.11g) - on both the macbook and the iPad.

Is this an acceptable level? I read that while 802.11g has a maximum speed of 54mbs but that actual speed is usually no more then half of that (=27mbs). So is 15 OK or should I try for better?

A lot of things can interfere with a wireless connection, but you should be getting better speeds.

Have you tried changing the channel on the wireless?

Marc -

Not yet. 15mbs is so much faster then my previous connections that I really wasn't paying attention. I'll try other channels.

Update -

I finally got around to messing with the router. First wireless test with the router set to "Automatic Channel Selection" produced a D/L speed of 12mbs. Changing the channel to 6 produced a speed of 9mbs! But changing to 1 or 11 resulted in a speed of approx. 25mbs. Nothing near the 45 mbs I get with a wired connection, but not bad.

Thanks to Marc for the suggestion.
