Missing Outlook .pst files?
« on: March 27, 2021, 03:50:07 AM »
I was trying to do a backup of my PC to my OneDrive account.  In the process, it said that my Outlook .pst file was holding it up and that this file needed to be moved outside of my documents.  I did this by creating a new folder outside of documents and put the .pst files in there.  Easy or so I thought.  After the backup was done, I thought I put the .pst files back where they belong.

I'm not sure I understand why this would interfere with a backup anyway, but that's another subject.  I'm using Windows 10 by the way.

My native Outlook account works fine.  I have a second POP e-mail account that's having the trouble.  I can access the account and look at e-mails up to last Wenesday.  Anything after that is gone.  In addition, I cannot send/receive from this account now.  When I try, I get a message box stating that my Outlook data file cannot be accessed (0x8004010F).

I moved the .pst files for this account back to my Outlook folder in documents where I thought it originally was.  When I go to view this file, it shows that sync is pending and won't allow me to do anything with it.  I closed Outlook and the pending sync message went away, but it's still not working for the second account. Any ideas?

Close Outlook before you backup and it shouldn't be an issue.  If it is, then something something is stuck.  Sometimes you have to go into Task Manager and kill the .exe.  Most nights it will probably work fine with it open, but that does happen with Outlook sometimes.  Quickbooks will do that too at times.

I went into Outlook settings and had it change the file where .pst files will be located for that account.  It assigned one with the same name as the original one with a (1) added.  It's in the same place where the original one is located.  I can now send messages, and they do get received, but I'm still not receiving anything.  The cloud backup did finish today once I had Outlook closed as expected, but still no joy.

You may have to delete and re-enter the account information.  I can remember fighting one of those a while back when we had to move a pst that was a nightmare.  I finally got it to work, but not without a lot of deleting and reentering.

Just box it up and send it to Marv.  He'll fix it for you.   :011:

I did a little more research and found that there's a tool called SCNPST.exe which repairs issues with PST files.  This actually worked to a certain extent.  I now receive e-mails for that account, but they are stored in the new file that Outlook created with the (1) as the only difference in the file name.  When opening this file, I'm able to copy/past everything over to my normal inbox and read/save/forward as usual.  I'm almost there.  My last step is to restore the file location to be the original one instead of the new one and I might have this thing licked.

OK, I got it repaired.  Once I got the original problem, I went back into the Outlook account settings for the POP account and changed the data file storage file location from the new one to the original one.  I then ran their repair tool and it appears that everything is aligned properly now.  Thanks for any help or ideas.

Glad you got it repaired. I was afraid you'd take Trace's advice and send it to me.
