2 pair digitals no longer supported?
« on: February 27, 2020, 07:08:54 PM »
Hello

My first post here.  I work for a company that has an Avaya CM system.  We are beginning to talk about upgrades to the PBX, and the engineer is telling us that 2 pair digitals are no longer going to be supported after the upgrade.  Initially this is no problem as we are replacing most 74xx phones with 2410’s. However in some locations there is still cat3 and pulling new wire is not an option to move to IP phones.  The reason I bring this up about IP is the 2410’s do not have enough button support to replace the 74xx phones, and the other option is alternative powered side cars which is not acceptable because of regulations requiring phones independent of power fail.  Are we getting a run around from our off site engineer?  If not what phones do we have as an option?

Those digital phones (both 7400 and 24xx) are end of support a long time ago.  Another options is 2420, still end of support, but lots of buttons.  Will they work when you upgrade to CM8? They should, but you'll likely be the first one doing that.  I've never tested it so YMMV.  Avaya still sells digital sets.  https://www.avaya.com/en/documents/fs-1400-series-lb4440en.pdf

You really need to leave last century behind and upgrade to IP sets.  Your footprint in the data center/server room will greatly be reduced as you no longer need all those dedicated digital line cards.  Gateway footprint becomes much smaller.  Moving phones becomes easier, maintenance becomes easier, etc.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for taking time to answers Mike's questions. We worked together at CenturyLink before I got RIF'ed and he went to work for Ameren as a telecom tech. Because I don't know much about the Avaya line, I told him to come here for answers.

Mike - you said the side-cars aren't an option because of regulations about power. If they allow the actual IP phone, the add-on module would be powered from the same source - the PoE switch. I guess they just need to drop the college requirement and hire me. I'll take care of the phones.  :011:
