It'll be on the mother board, and should be a 3V Lithium

Energizer 2032 Battery CR2032 Lithium 3v (1 ... Reply w/ #AmazonCart to add this http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0042A9UXC/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_Q1Vgub10FPFQM via @amazon

There is a battery strap on the board too, which is all you should need if clearing and resetting.

Are you thinking the battery went bad?

Yep.  They lost power here the other day--and I think they have a UPS--but they seem to have lost all of the programming.  Can they do a database backup using some sort of media card??

If someone had previously done a data backup, they should be able to reload form the smart media card. Make sure you check the date of the backup, since most likely it would be out of date, and there may have been many changes applied since. If you need help beyond that, feel free to email me directly, and I'll help with admin level stuff off line

I wonder if someone forgot to engage the battery strap on install.

Yep--that's what I was thinking, too.
