Dead Allworx 6X?
« on: December 10, 2013, 11:49:12 AM »
I just went out on a service call to a residence with a 6X installed. They lost power and when it came back, the system won't come back up. It lights up and I do get some minor flickering on the LAN port's LED, but the phones just get stuck at the "starting network" display. I did get some soft keys to come up one time and tried pressing the reboot key, but that didn't help.  It just said that it failed.

I've replaced the cable between the Allworx server and the switch (it was bad) and moved to other ports on the switch, but nothing changes. Is there anything else that I can do or should I just tell them to call someone else?

So a patch cable went bad during a power failure?  That's not a good sign.   :023:

Ed if you plug that new patch cable into your laptop, can you get to the internet?  I'm just wondering if they lost their switch, router, or DSL modem as well.

Ironically, I just dealt with that here in our office.  After the power came back up after the ice storm, I realized we had lost our 24 port switch for the downstairs offices.  In fact I just got back with a replacement.

Trace is right.

Plug a phone directly into the LAN port and see if it comes up.

Plug your laptop directly into the LAN port and try to access the GUI.

@Trace:  The patch cord didn't actually fail as a result of the power outage.  It just had a crappy plug on it as if someone tried to field-replace it.  That made no sense to me.  All I know is that when I replaced it, I got a link light that wasn't there before.

@Marv:  I really think I'd be getting in over my head if I have to resort to connecting a laptop.  I was hoping for something quick and easy that I can do.  Because all of the phones are showing the same kind of display, I'm fairly sure that their connections back to the switch are good.

Ed the fact that you got a connection light after replacing the cable is significant.  I assume Allworx uses a standard patch cable for connection, but I'm not versed on it.  The Adtran IADs we deal with do not use a standard cable, so replacing a bad cable with a patch cable wouldn't resolve the issue.

At this point I'd be back to pinging the outside world from the laptop to test connectivity.  Sorry.  Wish I was more help.  Maybe James or Stacey knows more about if it's a patch, crossover, or proprietary.

The server’s Admin page is a web page, which is accessed using a web browser.  You connect the Allworx to the LAN with a standard patch cord and then put yourself on the same subnet.  You then connect to its programming port through any browser. If you want more specific information, let me know and I'll PM.

Thanks for all of the help and suggestions.  I feel helpless as I've never worked with this system, but they guy called in desperation and my boss refuses to ever say no to anything (except to me).  I knew before I even got there that there was a very good chance that I wasn't going to be able to help, but I was hoping for a bad cable or reboot to work.

As it turns out, the customer has decided that he wants a new system anyway.  We just sent over a quote and we'll see what happens.
