Lost the ability to send when using Outlook.
« on: August 13, 2013, 08:47:22 AM »
We are in the process of moving our office and had to set up temporary computers in my boss's house because Verizon is dragging ass on getting our PRI moved to the new place.  Nothing has changed with the computers except that we don't have nearly as many on the network.  We are temporarily accessing the Internet via her FiOS service and most things are working just fine.

The problem is that we can receive e-mail, but we can't send it.  Outgoing messages just hang in the outbox.  All other net-related services, sites, etc. are working fine.  Does anyone have a clue as to what could be going on?  The error message says that Outlook is unable to connect to the outgoing (SMTP) server, but again, we didn't change anything whatsoever on our end.

That happens every so often with me too.
I have no clue what is wrong, but to get it working again I do these steps.
I try "1" - if it fixes it then I am done, if not goto step 2.

1  -  Reboot computer
2  -  Reboot cable modem & router
3  -  Run RegistryFix v8.0
4  -  Call provider and tell them to check everything.

Usually 1 or all gets it working again.

Ed if nothing has changed, there is a possibility that the ISP at the current location doesn't allow relay.  This happens when an ISP doesn't want SPAM being sent from their ISP, so they don't allow access to outgoing mail that doesn't originate from their servers.  If that's the case though you should get a message to that effect.

A more likely issue is that you're using Port 25 for SMTP, and the ISP may block Port 25.  That's become very common with ISPs like AT&T and probably Verizon.  If that's the case you normally have to use Port 587, and you may have to set your mail server to listen on that port.

Port 587 did the trick, Trace.  I've been having this exact problem at home with my Comcast service, but it really hasn't been bothering me as much.  Many thanks for the quick (and effective) response!

So if port 25 is the problem - does it sometimes work and sometimes not work?

Should I use 587 even if mine works most of the time on 25 ?

If only it were that easy.

The answer may be yes, and it won't hurt to try it.  You may be in a situation where 587 is open to you all the time, and your mail server is listening on that port.  If your mail server isn't listening, it'll never work.  If it is listening, but you're using a laptop for instance and you're going from place to place, you may find that at one coffee shop where you're using your laptop the ISP may be allowing Port 25, but perhaps 587 isn't open because of a firewall.  It doesn't happen often, but I'd hate to tell you just to use 587 all the time, becaue many hotspots filter various types of traffic.  At some of them I can't establish a VPN tunnel.  At other locations the ISP may block 25.

Just give it a try, and know that if you're not getting out that you can always play with the settings and maybe score a hit.

I have users that run into big problems with this on their smart phones when traveling around the country from one cellular area to another.

Thanks for that info.
I should have given you this info.
This is my office DeskTop PC.  So it does not travel.

I have about 5 or 6 different emails all from the same provider.
I can be running just fine.
Then all of a sudden, only ONE of the 6 will not work - Unable to connect....
Sometimes I can click on the ok and it keeps popping up again but keep clicking a dozen times and then it starts working.
Another day, it can be a different email address.
If clicking ok does not help, then a reboot usually takes care of it.
Any idea on that ?

Funny this topic came up. I just had that problem with my Android phone on the Sprint network and a Cablevision email account. It could receive but not send. Neither Sprint or Cablevision had the answer. I changed the port from the default 25 to 587 but still had to play with the other settings to make it work.

NT- that sounds like a provider issue.

Thanks Hal.

That is what I always thought - just hoping someone agreed with me.
My provider always blames my computer and my software.

I wouldn't expect anything more from them.
