VoIP Bandwidth
« on: July 03, 2013, 08:01:55 AM »
Greetings Folks, I like others on this site, am self-teaching this VoIP technology. What I'm trying to learn at this point is, how much bandwidth is actually needed for a large, (50 phone), IP system. I can't seem to be able to get a straight answer on this. Somewhere along the line I was told 69K per conversation. The SL1100 manual says 12K, depending on Codec used, packets per frame, and header size.

Am I wrong in assuming, starting from scratch, that a majority of existing infastructures will not support a VoIP system? One of our vendors explained to me that you have to have plenty of bandwidth, QoS switches and routers, & POE capabilities.

My primary question at this point is, how much bandwidth would you require for a system of approx. 50 IP telephones? TIA!!

Completely dependent on the system's CoDec support and client's call volume. Then it depends on QoS, VPN and other packet shaping features. There are some good (free) online calculators that I'm sure someone else will chime in with, however, I'm mobile now and don't have my bookmarks in front of me.

Do a Google search for "calculate voip bandwidth usage" and you should find some helpful articles. Also, don't assume every user will be on their phone at every point during the day and that every conversation will use maximum bandwidth the entire call. We had a client with 8 salesmen and 6 customer support reps using 3 SIP trunks on a 2/1 TWC MoDem without fault for over a year before they upgraded.

I know this is a older post. However when using 50 +or - sets, its is always better to have the provider supply the circuit. Much less problems.  about 70k per station will do.

Don't forget it's bidirectional. 70-100k EACH way.
