OfficeServ and Multicast Paging Support
« on: January 06, 2013, 11:15:01 AM »
We are trying to setup the Multicast paging feature on the OfficeServ 7200. We are using the DHCP feature of the 7200, thus there is no router installed on our equipment. It is just a stand alone system. The documentation is skeptical as is says you need a router with multicast support at the remote end for remote IP phones but does not suggest a router on the LAN side. I think we need a router at the officeserv 7200 side for this to work, but since it does not specifically state that in the manual my supervisor seems to think that a router is not needed thus having us try to get this to work without a router. Even when we called tech support, they could not tell us as they haven't set it up before. What do you all think. Is a router needed or not.

Thanks.

We just hired a samsung tech from Australia; their manuals seem to be better than the USA manuals for some things.  Their manuals come from Korea, the north american manuals come from Dallas according to the foot notes in the manuals.
We could get you the aussie manuals if you want to see what it says about Multicast...

OK, so I understand the big picture - so you have a 7200 with the internal DHCP turned on, some local IP phones that will pull an IP address using DHCP from the 7200; is the 7200 / local IP sets behind a router with DHCP turned off to protect it from the savages on the internet?

And you have a remote location which is also behind a firewall serving up DHCP to the local phones.

Does any of the phones work?  Or if i'm not describing what you have accurately, let me know...

Marty,

There is no router installed, this system just sits on its own internal network - with no remote/internet access at all.
The aussie manual would be great - whatever helps me understand this a little bit more.  Thanks

I just looked through the Australian prog manual, nothing more in it for multicast than we have.

How about for the setup?  local IP phones and remote IP phones? Or what is the setup?

all local phones, no remote phones. there is no router on this job. tech support has told us that they haven't even tested the multicast to see if a router needs to be installed or not. I think you need to have a router as I think the multicast is a feature of the router and not necessarily the phone system.

I sometimes think we are the only dealer that runs into these things. lol

***UPDATE***

so today went to customer site, when multicast paging is set to on and a page is made it shows the page on the display of the phones but no audio at all. This is on a 7200s with 4.63 and two ubigate poe switches.

Took a backup of the site, went to lab and setup exactly what the customer has. Even when system was is default mode, still had the same problem. Finally found out what the problem is.

You have to set it up within the UBIGATE switches. Funny how Samsung releases a feature and their own switches won't work with it unless you go in and set it up.  Samsung Tech support even said that the UBIGATES were not the problem. WOW.....

I wont go into specifics here as this is a public forum, but PM me if interested.

Thanks to all who replied on this....
