Important Information Regarding Passwords
« on: January 03, 2012, 06:50:18 PM »
Recent issues on other sites have raised questions regarding password security and prompted e-mails from some of our members.  For those concerned about their passwords, rest assured your password is safe here. The software used by this forum is very secure and encrypts all passwords in an SQL database. Passwords are hashed using MD5_hmac and some salt to keep them as secure as possible. In plain language that means even someone with access to the SQL database would not be able to see your password.

If you forget your password, the forum software that we use prompts you to enter the e-mail address you used when you created your account here. The software then sends you an e-mail with a link to reset your password. Your password is never revealed. Even if someone had the ability to access your e-mail account, they would only be able to change your password. There would be no way for them to find out what your original password was.  Therefore you would know right away if your account was accessed because your original password would no longer work. There are three screen captures below to show how this process works.

We hope this clears up any concerns anyone might have regarding the security of your password. Even though your password is stored safely on our secured server, we suggest you use a different password for each site you visit.
