I know I can call another station by pressing Intercom * and then the extension, but how do I set the system so they don't have to press * each time to make a hands free intercom call?

Program a DSS button with (intercom)(*) and the extension number. As long as the called extension has its HFAI button on you can speak hands free.

If you are asking if there is some way to make the system do this just by pressing an intercom button and dialing the extension, no can do. It's just going to ring.
