Sam Silverman, recently retired after 40+ years in the Telecom Industry.

Done most things from Key System Installer to CO Switchman to Network Manger to Construction Electrician and back to Installer again.

Retiring here in the Big Apple- though I am thinking about Carpetbagging for the Winters (New Orleans, Charleston & Savannah are currently leading in the Snowbird race)

And I am almost as grumpy as Hal.

Some of you may know me from Samsung, Comdial and up until recently as an owner of CONNEXTIONS.  However, I just joined forces with a Vegas IT Solutions and decided a new name would make things easier from a business standpoint as well as taxation standpoint.  The new name is Unleashed Networks.

Glad to be here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Names Bill semi-retired phone guy from western Nebraska.  Nice to see all the familiar faces.  Retired from AT&T back in 2001 than started my own very small interconnect.  Recently have slowed down so we can do some traveling and see more of the grandkids.

Thanks for the welcome.  We got back on the 13th.  We left Dumas Texas to a nice 62 degrees and the day before in Austin was 97.  The day before we got home there was six inches of snow just south of here, a couple inches here.  Needless to say we've gone through some pretty extreme weather changes.

We're still catching up.  Again thanks for the welcome.

Hi guys,

I'm more on the dispatch/coordination of technicians end for Continuant, headquartered in Fife WA; but I'm insatiably curious about listening in on techs and engineers discussing the phone systems - anything that makes me better at the job!  :011: Some of you may have seen my post on the Sundance Installers boards, username Continuant_GA, looking for technicians who service any system, any location, to add to our database in order to better cover our nation-wide customers.  If any of you or friends or colleagues are in need of work, we can at least offer the chance of it, as we have dozens of types of hundreds of systems, all over the country.  If you have questions as to my or our reliability, I would suggest asking Rich30529; his experience has, I would dare to say, been on the whole, good.  If you have any questions let me know!

-Chris

Hi all,
Ed Vaughn just let me know about this new site and I am happy to see some old faces that IMHO, are great people. As you all know I was tossed from the other site. I know there was a lot of discussion why and I was not able to defend myself. I moderate two of the largest boat forums on the internet so I get the rules. If you go back to the site that banned me and follow my long history there and what I contributed you will see I was hung out to dry and was part of a lynch mob.

I am happy to be here and happy to help those in our industry with my 30 plus years of experience

I speak my mind, enjoy that I may be wrong and want to learn, a day without learning something is a wasted day. With that said, why do I see a Buyer Zone add here?

You all know that if you are not a Buyer Zone guy (I am so know loss to me) those people that visit here (end users) will use your info to then go to that site and buy from Buyer Zone.

If the site needs money to run, I recommend that in order to get into an installers forum we make a contribution to the site. This money will help the site exist and not exploit are knowledge to go to a Buyer Zone and buy from the lowest dude.

I hope the powers to be do not delete this but understand where I am coming from. Revenue can be generated by other means, means that will help this site prosper as well as the people on this site.

Just My 2C

Walter

Hey Walter:

It took me a few to see what you were referring to as I don't see the ads.  Our Sonicwall filters them all.

Actually one of the nice things here is that there is no company in ownership that sells products, so there is no P&L to protect, nor is it about building a site that will be an asset on the balance sheet for a sale.  It's hopefully, just about the techs and the work.  The google ads can be tweaked to disallow certain categories and perhaps we should look at doing just that.  As for the money, we discussed that on a call right after the launch and that was never a goal of the board.  This board resides on a server that is operating several other enterprises that are about generating revenue, but in this case the ads were just added as a way to track some other things through google, learn their system better, and if it brought in a few bucks, that's great too.

Except for the fact that the prevailing winds keep the oil in N'Awlins instead of West TX, you have a thought.  Notice that Walter is here.  Hi Walter!  We were just talking about you and here you are!

Next, maybe a certain Oakie ought to start stumbling in LOL.

It is depressing to see ads from your suppliers in the banners, but then I don't send my customers to sites like this.  It's a shame that they can't tailor the ads to logged in users vs. non logged in and show different ads to different levels of users.

Walter, I don't like you Lozer Zone promo.  Each has different reasons for lead service, but I find an alliance with the local cable company rep is far more rewarding than the leads from the service.  Too many "tire kickers" and I found myself paying out lead money to drop paper for the competition.  If I hear VoIP one more time from one of those clowns, I'm going to drive to their site and choke them to death.
"We want VoIP to save money"  Yeah?  What is it?

Anyway, not that most of you don't know me, but I've been in the industry for 38 years, starting at the phone company and in the interconnect biz since '81.  Most of my accounts are in the sub 50 stations, except for the hospitality systems.  I do cabling, systems, paging, wireless internet, and video distribution, as well as service for a couple of national accounts.  I've been with one of the evil nationals for 25 years :-)

I still enjoy my job, most days, and I don't see quitting in the near future, although the thought of changing locations is always a possibility.

Carl

hey everybody, i just wanted to introduce myself and say what an awesome knowledge and support network everybody has established. I have been working in the communications field for about 5 years doing almost everything from wireless data links, and phone systems (mainly Nortel, a little Panasonic, and now Samsung), 2 years through my electrical apprenticeship among other things. Untill now I have not seen many if any installer/tech support forums with the varied experience and knowledge and  I hope I can contribute to as well as learn a great deal from this community.

Click on Profile in the blue bar at the top > Under "Modify Profile" on the left click on "Forum Profile Information."  From there you can link to a picture onine or upload your own by selecting "I will upload my own picture" and click the Browse button to select the picture.  I think you have to remember to click the "Change Profile" button at the bottom to save the changes.

Yup! I'm mainly a Vodavi/Vertical guy, XBlue and NEC DSX too! I dabble in servicing a couple of other lines as well (whatever pays the bills today). But the remaining stuff in my  head is pretty much vintage stuff. You know, the stuff in which Sam is the real master!

Gene -

Thanks for the pics - a real blast from the past. I worked for UCS from 1978-1981. Nice people, well run operation.

I ran the Bronx VA, Van Cleef and Arpels, Yankee Stadium, the Biltmore, Roosevelt, Tuscany and Milford Plaza Hotels and a bunch of Gulf & Western jobs for them.

Long time ago.

Sam

I was doing the VA in Augusta, Ga while you were doing the Bronx, sometime in 79, I think. Left there, went to Minneapolis and Castle Point, NY VAs. Supposedly, the reason Bell South bough UCS was because we were getting the vast majority. I surveyed 13 one summer and we got 8 of them, as I recall.

So what happened to Bell South? When did they get out of the business? Or did they get bought too?

They eventually turned the Roanoke office into an accounting center. As far as I know theyre still operating, thats who D. Dragan was working for in Atlanta until he retired. I left somewhere around 1990 when the St. Lukes/Roosevelt Hospitals were being installed in NYC. Gene

Sam

At&t bought Bellsouth a couple of years ago.

Added: It's very unfortunate too. The customer service, technician skill level, the and overall understanding of telecommunications in general seems to have walked out, or has been forced out by the higher-up's at At&t. No one there seems to know anything anymore. Bellsouth was a good company, IMO.
Title: Re: Welcome New Members - Please Introduce Yourself
Post by: silversam on August 20, 2010, 07:38:38 AM
Thanks Rich.

UCS, which started as a competitor to AT&T gets bought by BellSouth which is a spin off from AT&T which then gets bought by.......AT&T!

What happened to my industry?

If you are a member of the telecommunications industry, please take a minute to say hello and tell us a little about yourself.

Hey everyone!  Not a 'member of the telecommunications industry',  but hey, thought I'd say hello anyhow!

Some of you may remember me from the other place,  Richard, Ed V., and everyone who were/are always gracious and willing enough to help out a total hack like me, what a great bunch of professionals!    I signed up here a year or  so ago, been in and reading just never posted.

Still volunteering and digging, have been busy enough with work so I haven't got into any trouble on projects where I need everyone's expertise here (yet).

I'm really glad to see everyone here, you guys have a lot of respect from me. :047:

Hello. My name is Joe Westerberg. I've come here hoping to find out more about the relationship between phone techs / vendors and companies like mine which provide professionally recorded voice prompts. Hold on... don't hangup just yet. I was also a Telephone Tech... yes sir... I was an IC and Dimension 2000 tech in the Navy... anybody remember the Dimension 2K? I understand the "fun" of installs. I will never forget the "fun" of getting zapped by 98vac ringer voltage while trying to hook up phone lines to submarines in the rain at Pt Loma in San diego. But... I digress. I have several phone tech clients who use my services for their clients. But I'm kinda surprised I don't have more.

Welcome to myphonetechs, I hope you'll find this a good place for making new contacts.   There are a few old timers like myself who did time with the Bell System. I know all the Dimension products very well or did at one time, 100, 400, 400E, 600, and 2000. I was a BPE Engineer for SNET and also worked at Bell Labs on a special development for the D2000 for IBM.

Welcome to the board Patrick!

What type systems do you service?

I don't have any one system that I support. I deal mostly with the infrastructure side of things and I am currently dealing with a very old and porly maintained Panasonic DBS 576 system at the local fairgrounds.

I have also worked with the old Partner systems and  several Adtrans.

Well it's great to have you.  Wayne is our resident Panasonic guru, so maybe he can help you with that old system should you need any.  I'm glad to hear that you  have some Adtran knowledge.  We battled an issue a few years ago on one that had everyone shrugging their shoulders.

Hello all! New member here, great site and very happy to have found it.
My name is Richard Buck, I have been working in telecom since 1992. I just got the BICSI TECH cert this December,  easier than I thought, and now my boss wants me to get RCDD.
I have done outside plant line construction, inside plant, fiber splicing, copper splicing and the list goes on and on.
I worked up on Alaska's North Slope for the last 15 yrs as an O&M tech for two different oil companies.  This was a great job, lots of exposure to many different technologies and ideas.  I have gone to work in helicopters, boats, snow machines and hover craft and tracked rigs. I have worked on the worlds largest directional drilling rig and other extreme type applications. I have installed tower top microwave dishes and wave guide, done tower work at -40 below but as they say " Its tougher in Alaska". I grew up in Fairbanks, AK so I have been here since 1971.
So I am responding to a request to introduce myself from CMDL Guy.  I posted in the paging section and received good feed back.
So CMDL GUY; i am not dealer of KSUs and I have never installed a complete unit before so I am not bidding this portion of the project.  I just started with a new local contractor " STAR ELECTRIC " here in Fairbanks AK.  I am the comm dept and this contractor has never had a comm dept.  I really don't want to get into the position of saying I can do something but can't deliver.  My boss nor I can afford it so I need to hold back a bit.  I have contacts and I will probably call and have a discussion or two.  For all my years, and the varied background,  there are things I just haven't done and this industry is so vast its hard to claim knowledge of everything and I have to draw the line somewhere.

Welcome to the board Richard.

This is a smaller community, but that's because it's not geared too much toward supporting end users with anything more than what end users are supposed to be doing.  That said as a telcom professional you'll find the core group here as being an awesome resource and a wealth of information.

Hello Guys,

I am in Charlotte NC and just got back into the equipment game.. Some background.. Sold phone systems from '93-'01 then opened up my own shop in '02 , strapped on the work belt and learned how to put them in myself!  I sold the business in '08 to another "one man shop" who relocated to the area and then I got into Internet Marketing the last 7 years..

So, lately I got itchy to get out of the house and stop staring at computer screens all day doing internet marketing, and I decided (with the help of my wife- who wants me out of the house!) to get back into installing phone systems again....  trouble is, the system i knew really well, the nortel norstar is now DEAD!!

So, an old telecom buddy recommended the NEC SL 100 and I signed up through the local distibutor ADI to become an installer... So, today I am  starting to weigh the options of also becoming an ESI dealer...

Can any of you tell me your experiences with either system?  I have read quite a bit on the forum so far on both NEC SL and the ESI.. so I would like to read your opinions on the systems and the support you get as an installer...

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

First off, welcome to the board.  It's great to have you.  There are lots of one man shops around here which accounts at least a little for the slow response to your post.  :011:

The other reason is there isn't much support here to end users, other than "end user" level support.  We do have some amazing telco minds here for supporting other telcom professionals like yourself though.

I completely understand your position.  From a phone system standpoint, I'm pretty much an Inter-Tel guy which was gobbled up by Mitel to get rid of the competition.  My company still services a lot of them, but like you I have been looking at some other options, and let me tell you it's hard to find a small business level cabinet that will do what the Inter-Tel systems do.  That said, also like you I have been looking hard at the NEC SL1100, and Stacey, (board name Keighlar) has been a wealth of knowledge in helping me learn much about that system.

As for ESI, John Grider here on the board probably knows more about ESI than any tech I've ever met.  He's also a business owner so he can tell you the pros and cons of paying the extra fees to be a premium level distributor or whatever the term is ESI uses.

David,

If you've read through some of the SL1100 posts here on the board, you'll see that my opinion on this little system has changed over time. It does a lot for the lowest price point I've seen and the NEC Support is top notch.  If you have any specific questions, please feel free to open up a topic in the NEC forum.

Welcome back to the game!  :064:

HI MacGyver and Keighlar,

Thanks for the warm welcome!  I am hearing great things about both systems the last few weeks I have been researching. Most phone techs work on 1-2 systems so I think I am going to adopt both.

I liked what I saw from the SL 1100 and watched a few webinars on NTAC... my only concern was that it maxed out at under 100 digital sets (more sets can be added by VOIP of course) but that made me pause a bit... Back when I had my business years ago I had 2 clients that started with 5-10 phone and grew to over 100 within 2 years.  The Norstar accommodated that growth and they loved that they could keep their phones and switch out for more system cabinets.  I see the ESI System has that kind of growth with "evergreen" technology like the Norstar did.  It also has a lot more features that I didnt know about (that the NEC SL 1100 does not) like connection to access control hardware, connection to surveillance cameras plus the "verbal help" already built into the phones is a huge help for clients who want their hand held.

I am very excited to be back in the game and have both of these phone systems to market and the forum to support me!  If any of you are in Charlotte or Raleigh and need a hand with cabling, or anything, just let me know! :045:

Cheers,
David

I feel your pain David.  The old Inter-Tel systems did it all and more.  In fact we're still putting referb systems with warranties because it's so hard to find a suitable replacement.  Some of the things about the NEC concerns me as well.  I really didn't like the plastic cabinet with stacked cards.  In the past we've had to walk users through frogging a card with one we left on site.  It's common for us to do that with locations that are hours away so they're not down until we can get there.  With real cabinets that's not major surgery, but if you have to disassemble the entire cabinet to get to the bottom card, the system is down the entire time you're doing it, and it's not an end user friendly task.

I'm actually on a web conference with a technology company in Raleigh right now.  We don't do much out there, but I'll make sure my contacts out there know about you just in case they need anything.
