Title: Changing COM port number

I am tring to change my COM port number on my laptop and am getting a message of something about write privileges in registry.

What are you trying to communicate with and what software (communications software and OS) are you using?

The COM port works just fine , I just need to make it COM 2 instead of 1 , Im running XP Pro

If the com port is functional why do you need to change anything? A lot more info would help.

I don't think you can change it's identity. It's a BIOS issued name based on memory addresses going back to the days of DOS.

Go to device manager,expand the ports tree,right click the communication port and go to properties,go to port settings tab,click advanced,com port number should be on the bottom of the window.

Thats what Im doing and Im getting the error message , I was able to make it work without changing the number.  THANKS GUY'S

Does the PC have an internal modem?  If so, it most likely is set to com2. What bmreen stated should work.
