In another thread, Marv and I were lightly discussing the way Canada handles things differently.  Hockey is coming back, but Canada was very strict on how it could/would be handled.  Essentially sequestering half the league in one bubble and the other in a different bubble, in a different city.  They will remain their until they are sent home for good.

Toronto flat told the Blue Jays no.  They will not play baseball in Toronto, and now the wisdom of Toronto is already being seen. Gee who could have seen this ending badly before it ever got started.

MLB's Worst Nightmare Is Here. They Should Have Seen It Coming
The league is grappling with a widespread COVID-19 outbreak...

And here we have it, the least surprising possible outcome of MLB’s decision to fly some 1,500 people around the country, from one coronavirus hotspot to another...

But the Marlins played three games against the Phillies this weekend. Last week, they played two exhibition games in Atlanta against the Braves. It’s impossible to know how far the infected droplets sprayed...

Why did athletes, rather than infectious disease specialists, get to make that decision? Because there are no adults in the room. There never have been.

Marv, I don't follow baseball and to my knowledge you don't either, but a friend sent me this article I thought you might find interesting:

As a lifelong suffering Texas Rangers fan I love baseball.  This is the biggest bonehead move in sports as of yet. What could possibly go wrong in the middle of an expanding pandemic?

Agreed, Dave.  Follow the money.  Always, follow the money.

Follow the money.  Always, follow the money.

This will always flush out the reason and/or the truth!  :066:

NHL has setup a 24 team playoff (usually it's 16). Games will be played in 2 cities. One for the eastern conference (Toronto), the other for the west (Edmonton). All players are sequestered in the same hotels until they are eliminated. Once eliminated the players can go home. I believe any Canadian players will be required to isolate for 14 days once they return home. All games will be played with no fans in attendance and all televised. With no fans in the building the networks will be using 24 cameras instead of the usual 8. Although I don't agree with sports resuming, this will interesting to watch.

Baseball lost me after the strike in 1994. Before that I was gaga for the game. The nail was when The Montreal Expos (my team) moved to Washington. They never recovered from the strike and were in first overall when the season was cancelled.

I'm happy to say, I have no interest in any sport, including NASCAR.

It used to be an escape from politics and now it's at the center of politics!

" Follow the money.  Always, follow the money."

Sports have become untenable financially at this point anyway. Mookie Betts gets a contract that basically guarantees $79K per day for the next 13 years. A day. Owners aren't putting butts in the seats nor dollars in the merchandising coffers and yet they still do this. No wonder it's $400.00 to take your kid to a game after you factor in parking, tickets, food and beverages, and merchandise. As a bonus though you could now get Corona. And I ain't talking a Mexican beer.

Sorry for the off topic rabbit hole expedition...but you know me.

I was afraid of that!

This was a 30 minute video where doctors talked about the dangers of COVID-19 and the prevention of coming down with it when using hydroxychloroquine.  These doctors claim many of the problems with hydroxychloroquine are do to heavy dosages given to patients and trying to use it as a cure. There is still a lot of controversy on that.

They recommend one tablet every other week for the prevention of COVID-19.  Other countries have this as an over-the-counter drug.

I discussed this with my best friend who was a missionary for 30 years in Africa.  He told me this AM,  about his family (wife and two children)  having long term side effects from taking hydroxychloroquine in heavy dosage for a long period of time.

I wish we could get moving on this without the politics! Hal was right, you cannot separate this from politics!  :016:

Another thing occurred to me. I keep hearing how China and Russia pharma are trying to hack our computers trying to find out what we are doing as far as a vaccine. Wouldn't it be better if everybody compared notes?  I don't even think the drug companies here are talking. Why? Because the company that comes up with a viable vaccine or cure stands to win the patent and billions in profit.

Doesn't matter if we have to wait longer while they compete for the prize.

Hal, I believe your post is right on the money!   If taking one tablet every other week will prevent catching the virus, imagine how much money the drug companies would loose with an over the counter cheap drug!

Deja vu?

You probably haven't heard of this guy, I haven't. Dr. DA Henderson, leader of the international effort to eradicate smallpox. In 2006 at 78 years of age amid the SARS epidemic, Dr. Henderson and others penned a paper about what is known about the possible actions that might be taken to lessen the cases and numbers of deaths resulting from an influenza pandemic.

Quote
The threat of an influenza pandemic has alarmed countries around the globe and given rise to an intense interest in disease mitigation measures. This article reviews what is known about the effectiveness and practical feasibility of a range of actions that might be taken in attempts to lessen the number of cases and deaths resulting from an influenza pandemic. The article also discusses potential adverse second- and third-order effects of mitigation actions that decision makers must take into account. Finally, the article summarizes the authors’ judgments of the likely effectiveness and likely adverse consequences of the range of disease mitigation measures and suggests priorities and practical actions to be taken.

This is the text book that they seem to be following today except that they seem to have some reading comprehension problems. In  short, they are doing everything wrong.

Read it for yourself and see. Note that I wondered where the term "social distancing" came from. Seems it was coined by the politicians back then.
