Automotive GPS Navigation Systems
« on: January 30, 2020, 01:53:25 PM »
Do you still use a GPS, do you use your phone, or have a new car with built in GPS?

My 10 year old Garmin is starting to act up and want to replace it.   What do you recommend?

I have a 2015 Subaru with built in GPS, but it's out of date. i use google maps now on a Samsung phone. Works very well and it's always up to date.

Car companies charge $200-$300 to update their built in systems.

I use either Google maps or Waze through Android Auto played through the screen of my 2018 Silverado. Can't see paying for OnStar navigation.

I still have my old Garmin, but it hasn't been updated in about 5 years.  Maybe more.  It's started to become too outdated to use.  I've recently started trying Waze and it's been fine.  I like it well enough.

Dunno. Where the heck do you go that your GPS is that outdated in 5 years? The only issue I've found with my 2017 Escape is that the car turns into a boat when crossing the river on the Mario. It's still loyal to the old Tappan Zee (and I don't blame it).

I can download new maps from Ford for $100, put the file on a thumb drive, stick it in the USB in the car and it will update. But the lease is up in a few months so let the next guy worry about it.

New housing developments and business parks. My city is booming. I end up in farmer's fields and forests.

Google Maps is always current and my Samsung Bluetooth plays turn by turn on the car speaker.

$100.00 is cheap for a car upgrade.

We have a lot of new development in every area in Virginia. The problem I see is the "new" maps available for download are not up-to-date either! They may be slightly better than what I already have.

I guess you have the "Ford SYNC 3",   mine is the "Ford SYNC 2"  which no longer has navigation as an option

We just (last week) got a 2020 Chevy Equinox Prime. It comes with built in Navigation, that, if I understand it correctly, automatically updates and connects via sim card in the car.

I'm not using it. The car comes with the hookup to the iPhone and I use Waze.
