FCC probes outage of CenturyLink 911 emergency call service

Because I've been in the telephone industry in my area for so many years I have memorised the telephone numbers to all of the local emergency systems in my area but I'm pretty sure most people do not do that. I still have to wonder what would happen if a person simply dialed "0" and ask to be connected to the police what would happen. I have an idea that it would not be as pretty as the utilitility provider's want us to believe it would be.

I'm guessing they would attmempt to connect you with 911.

CenturyLink took over the former Embarq/Sprint/United territory here in Eastern NC a while back.  Since then, they supposedly took over Level 3 (CLEC) as well, and reliability here has gone to hell in a hand basket.  It sucks because they use 5ESS offices and Sprint did a remarkable job of rehab on nearly all of the OSP facilities.  Today's failure of the day was multiple PRI circuit failures.  We had four of them, and they were out of three different COs within minutes of each other.

The problem isn't the hardware or infrastructure, it's the company.  It's pathetic and it shows.  Spectrum cable is taking their customers left and right around here, and justifiably so.

Ed... It's amazing to me to hear that Spectrum is the good carrier in your area.  Here, they are a nightmare.  Installs and service are almost impossible to schedule - communications are lost or non-existent.  If you don't stay on top of them constantly, they will absolutely mess up the order.  They have three departments that operate like separate entities for complex voice services (PRI and SIP trunks), internet services, and coax services (POTS lines/TV, etc).  God help you if you attempt to set a customer up with services from all three departments.  Again... NIGHTMARE. 

I disliked them at the time, but now I miss Time Warner every day.
