The new driver’s license and ID card meet the specific requirements of the federal REAL ID Act, a 2005 law passed by Congress that dictates the issuance process for cards to be accepted as proof of identification for federal purposes.

I finally succumbed and got the Enhanced NYS license the last time I renewed so that I could pass into Canada and more easily board flights.  I was loathe to do it, but I keep it in a metal-lined sheath so it can't be picked by nearby RFID readers.
