Option 61/81 console SEB Cable Adapter
« on: September 06, 2018, 06:06:19 PM »
I have an Option 81 that I do work on.  I have a remote support tech if things get too deep.
There is NO monitor in the room - only an SEB that the remote tech dials into if he needs to.

There is a line cord with RJ45 that plugs into an adapter that changes the RJ45 to DB9.
If I need access to the system, I have to unscrew the DB9 (which is a big pain)  and then take that cable and
connect to my laptop to access the system.

I want to have my own DB9 to RJ45 adapter so that all I have to do is unplug the line cord and plug it into my
adaptor.  Problem is, I do not know exactly what the pin-outs are.

I asked the remote tech - he gave me a link to a web page, but I don't think that is the correct pin-out.
I look on the internet and I get all kinds of different configurations for DB9 to RJ45

I was out to this site today.
I did not have a lot of time but took the time to take the adapter apart and as best as I could
I wrote down the wiring.
Because I was in a hurry - I forgot to find one thing - the order of the pins on the DB9.
Was I looking from the front or the back of the DB9 plug.
So it could be 1,2,3,4,5  or backwards (5),(4),(3),(2),(1).
But this is what I saw and you can switch the pin numbers accordingly.

RJ45 - - - DB9
1 Blue -  - 6 - (9)
2 Org  -  - 9 - (6)
3 Black-  - 3 - (3)
4 Red  -  - nowhere
5 Green  - 5 - (1)
6 Yellow - 1 - (5)
7 Brown - 4 - (2)
8 White - -2 - (4)
- - - - - - Looped on DB9  8 to 7 - (7) to (8)

Does this really look right?
It works.
And I know the saying, "If it works then use it"

Does anyone have a "For Sure" configuration for this adapter?
Just in case I missed something and did not mark it right.

I am looking for feedback before I put these pins together and
cut up wires to do the loop.
Once I push the wire into the DB9 it will not come out very easily.

Thanks

Why don't you configure onr of the other com ports and use a DB25 to DB9 null modem cable?

I would do exactly what Marv suggested. Admin'ed many of these Options switches that way.

I am not sure where the other port cables are located and I prefer not to go digging.
Most likely they are still inside the PBX somewhere.  And I am not that experienced on configuring the
other ports.  Then I don't have power available at the back of the PBX for my laptop if that is where the cables are
and no desk or stand to set my laptop on.  So everything is available near the SEB.
The SEB is setting in the rack.  Easy access to the Line Cord to unplug it from that adapter.
I just don't like unscrewing that adapter from the DB9 port - I do it carefully, but I don't know how
careful the other techs would be if I am busy and need to send my sub.
Some people screw those things down so tight the internal nuts come loose trying to take the screw back off.

I use it off the SEB but the more that adapter is unscrewed and re-screwed, I just foresee problems in the
future.  Just unclipping a line cord is much less risky and so much faster.

I will just make up one from what I saw and hope I didn't miss anything and try it then next time I need it.
I was just hoping to find info on "This is how it is wired".  But no such luck.

Thanks for the reply

This may help if wish to build a converter. It is for the Option 11 but will work on all SDI ports through the Option series line.
