This is an old thread but with follow-up news.

On January 29, 2016 I posted the following; " I plan to test for the General license in April, I really want access to the HF frequencies."

Well........I finally took the test today and passed!  :008:   I don't know why I waited so long!  :023:

Thanks everyone!

I hope to go for the next and final upgrade on October 19, 2019.

Let's see if I keep that date or will it take me another 3 & 1/2 years!   :011:

VE7MRD.  I got into it when I was in junior high school, around 1980 or so.  Started learning morse too but when I moved to senior high there was no club or equipment.  You're right, smart phones and the internet killed ham radio.  I talked to my nephew about it but he has all the answers he needs with google and Facef**k.  He even doesnt care about internet or picture security.  I don't know what to use to change any of that.

Don't know if the internet and smart phones killed ham radio by itself. What I do know killed it is the lack of manual skills and the lack of knowledge of things technical. We spent hours every day at the bench building things. Today's kids spend their days playing video games or playing a dozen different sports.

And their stupid parents don't know any better.

Just went to my favorite electronics parts shop and it's closed. Radio Shack skipped town years ago. Nobody builds stuff anymore. All I wanted was a 9V battery plug. Now I have to spend $10.00 shipping to buy a $1.99 part on the internet.

Start using Radio Shack on-line!  When you purchase  at least $19 worth of parts the shipping is free! You are already into $12, get a few extra parts to keep on hand.

It's never free to ship from the USA to Canada.
