partner acs with hum on calls
« on: January 06, 2016, 02:25:08 PM »
I have a Partner ACS with r3 acs ,3-308 and a vs5 mail.
If you call out on any set there is a hum like a fan hum on the phone.
If you plug a set directly into port ,no hum
If you go on co line with butt set and dial out
no hum.
The system is in a large cabinet in the kitchen and shares it with 3 servers,2 new servers
There is a an exhaust fan in the cabinet ,I unplugged  the fan no change
I'm thinking its rfi from the new power edge servers.

As a side note the vs5 is old and the hard drive is is whining much like the noise on lines, could it be ?

This weekend they will turn down the servers and see if noise goes

Any ideas

Well if you plug a phone directly into the cabinet, and no hum, it would seem to not be the system.
Is it every phone, and is there something common to the cabling?

I had a similar problem awhile back. Pulled my hair out trying to confirm hum being induced on the wiring because, like you, plug the phone in directly and no hum. Turned out to be the power receptacle and or circuit. This system was in a drugstore with an external IVR that connected to the Partner like a 2 port VM unit. Worked fine since it was installed then bingo, one day the hum was there. I have no idea why and don't care. IVR was up in the store, Partner system was down in the basement. Plugged the IVR in somewhere else and all was much better. Hum was still there but barely audible.

Are you hearing the hum when you pick up an extension or just on outside calls?

Did some idiot sparkie install a isolated ground receptacle? I think that's what the problem was with that IVR, that's what I disconnected it from. I haven't seen a sparkie yet that knows how to install an IG receptacle or know that they aren't needed anymore.

I seem to recall something similar that happened to me a few years back. I think mine was either a bad 308 card or a bad 308 power supply I don't exactly recall. I think I remember being on x10 and pulling cards out until it went away....

What I'm trying to get at is if the hum is only on calls or always. On intercom? What happens if you unplug one of the CO lines and press that line button? Hum still there? Disconnect all the CO lines, what happens then?

No. He doesn't know what he is talking about. Doesn't look like a power problem at all now. Since the problem was "cured" by pulling and reinstalling the VM mod I would suspect a problem with the carrier connectors. That's a pretty common problem with the Partners as they get old. Pulling and reseating the mods can fix some weird problems. Keep your fingers crossed that it doesn't reoccur but at least now you know where to look.
