how can I find what Carrier supplies a number
« on: July 24, 2013, 06:36:04 AM »
my customer has did trunks through earthlink at the main office . some of these have been ported to CLEC's for various reasons bright house mostly . there is one particular number that they want to change routing on . its not part of my DID group but it look like it once was . when I go to my did routing table the number is there but no matter what change I make to it (including deleting it ) it still winds up at the same VM

Earthlink says its still part of the DID , Brighouse says not them .

I suspect it was ported some carrier and then remote call forwarded

how could I find out  who has control of the number ?

it doesn't appear at any physical address that I'm aware of so dialing 0 wont work

Once upon a time, 1-700-555-4141 use to work here. It doesn't anymore.

Thanks Dave , I don't think it works here anymore either the thing is I don't have access to the number it's forwarded to a VM somewhere and I don't know if it physically exists anywhere .

You might try sending a PM to Anthony or Paul.  You would think Earthlink would know, but I've dealt with them long enough to know better, and it looks like you have too.

Perhaps this link will help. http://fonefinder.net/

Edit. another thing I thought of is to dial "0 0 " and if it tells you who the long distance carrier is call them and ask if they have a clue.

Hey Skip:

Ken, one of my techs has a friend that works over at Level III handling the porting of numbers.  He said if you don't have this resolved he'll call over there for you and he can probably find out.  I also have a source we use for investigation purposes that might pull it up.

Thanks for the offer Trace .

I'm going to stop by tomorrow and give it one last try , maybe I'll call the carriers when I'm there and see if I can get anywhere with it . if not I'll shoot you a PM with the info and we can take it from there .

Found it , its being "virtually call forwarded"  by earthlink . we have requested they turn it back into a DID number and it will happen in 10 -14 days

It doesn't make sense Looking at the phone bill I found it and 7 other numbers being "virtually call forwarded " When I asked what number they where forwarded to the CSR told me they where forwarded to the company's main number  the company's main number is on the list and is being forwarded to another number  the erthlink CSR was clueless as to what was going where

when I dial them thats not where there going . the whole virtual forwarding thing didn't make sense  but as long as it becomes a DID that we can forward where we want it . we can deal with the rest of the numbers later

I appreciate the input here , Ill post more details about the Earthlink forwarding as I find more details

Sounds like a phreaker may have accessed the system.  They take actual numbers and remote call forward them to different bridges when they run scams.

Glad you got it figured out Skip.
