Topic: solid state or gas tube

For a building entrance terminal would a recommendation be gas tube or solid
state protectors. ?
This is to protect 7 stataions in 3 other buildings.

Ken, I would use the 5 pin solid state.
Maybe a 12 pair going out from the main and 6 pair at each remote location.

The five pin solid state, if low enough rated, would do it, BUT, for real strikes, gas works better.  Yes, gas comes in five pin also.

How do Solid State protectors match up to Carbon. We used to use carbon for Analog off premise stations and Gas for the switch side. Never had any problems with Gas protectors.

With so much of the new equipment being digital these days I would suspect that gas would be the way to go.

I never worked with SSD. The last few years I worked OSP all we did was fiber.

I've had better luck with gas tube protection.  I'm not a big fan of solid state protection equipment.  On paper, it sounds great, but my experience in the field has shown more equipment damaged when using SS as opposed to gas tube.  Five-pin modules are a must though.

The best protection is provided by using both.  Gas tube in the actual BET and solid state as secondary.  If possible, a good 50 feet of copper between the BET and the solid state units seem to work best.

the consensus is 5 for gas tube and 3 for solid state.


I requested that they get a knowledgeable electrician in for the grounding of the phone system and
entrance terminal.
 There is the electrical main box and a well in the basement and a driven ground right out side the basement.
