TV optical audio output standards?
« on: July 12, 2017, 10:24:59 PM »
This isn't really a paging question, but I thought I might start here.  My LG TV has an optical output port, but that's all.  No other outputs are available.  My girlfriend bought me a sound bar, made by Phillips, to use with it.  I purchased a Tosslink optical cable to connect them, but the sound bar doesn't work.  I tried changing the output settings on the TV for the optical (digital) output and tried both the auto and PCM modes, to no avail.  Of course, the sound bar is set for the optical input.

Are these things proprietary with regard to the optical connection?  Did she just waste her money by not purchasing an LG unit?

Try using your cable box optical output.

Wondering if you don't have a defective cable?  I've had that happen quite a few times. Or maybe the soundbar? does the sound bar have any other hookups that you could atleast try to see if your getting sound out of it?  I have also seen where the optical input on the TV/speaker/receiver may have had a collection of dust/dust ball inside the cover and blew it out with air and reconnected and all was fine.
