Title: Interesting service issue with CATV phone service today
Post by: EV607797 on January 23, 2020, 09:29:47 PM
I got a call from my parents who told me that when someone calls their home phone number, it answers with what sounds like a fax.  I tried it and sure enough, it was being answered by a modem.  My first thought was the security system, or even their fax, but no.  The fax is on a separate line, but I was grasping at straws.  I disconnected everything in the house and it rang just fine with no answer.  Their answering machine was picking up after five rings, which is when the modem tone was heard.  I later found that ANY device that answered the line would result in this tone.  It turns out that the new EMTA that Spectrum is using, made by 'Ubee' was the culprit.  Once the line is answered, it turns itself into a modem and takes over the line.  A hard reboot of the EMTA resolved this, but it was definitely a first for me.

I won't go into the numerous times they spent on the phone with Spectrum being told that the problem was with their phone "system".  :022:

Sadly, that's how technology is going today.

Translation; "I don't know what I'm doing, so go away"

I swear, Spectrum doesn't even try to fix a problem until you have cold, hard evidence planted under their nose.  Even then, good luck.   :022:

From a Spectrum gateway, we were running a ping loop to Level 3 by IP address so it wasn't going through a DNS server, a ping to Google so that it was going through the DNS server, a ping to the DNS by IP, and pings going out all the VPN tunnels.  When one would drop, they would all drop.  Spectrums response was, "So what does all of those people going down have to do with us?"  :035:

And that was their stance.

I thought I disliked Time Warner, but I would beg the telephony gods to have them back again if it made any difference.

Its come to the point on some of these providers I power off their equipment and then tell them it's on just to get a tech to the site to fix the problem.   They are unbelievable any more.

Some people have been known to disconnect a drop, or take a straight pin and put it through the cable jacket so that the braid contacts the center core.   :022:

I had a customer with no service and, unknown to me, the tap out on the pole was bad. So there was no signal to the house. John, the customer service rep in Bangladesh ran a "test" and said he couldn't find a problem. It must be because the customer owed $64.00- that wasn't even billed yet.
